Laurence A. Jones, Jr. Scholarship

Recipient: Amanda Caldwell

Amanda Caldwell

“Receiving the Laurence A. Jones, Jr. scholarship was a very inspirational gift. Monetarily, it has opened up more opportunities to pursue interests in the lab that I would not have been able to do otherwise, and these experiences have been very enriching to my academic career. This scholarship is so much more than that, though. Having met Mrs. Jones and having witnessed firsthand the support and love of the many people involved in keeping the memory of Laurence Jones alive has been truly amazing. It is an honor to be a part of this.”

The Laurence A. Jones, Jr. Scholarship was established in 2002 by Yong Cha Jones. Mrs. Jones’ son, Laurence A. Jones, Jr., was murdered in 1993 while he was attending graduate school in Baltimore, Maryland. The scholarships are awarded to second and third year students, and a preference is given to those students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or better and those students who are majoring in psychology.

Laurence A. Jones, Jr. was very dedicated to the University of Maine, and he was an excellent student. For those reasons Mrs. Jones established this scholarship. What Mrs. Jones did not anticipate was the feeling of relief and comfort that she would feel upon its establishment. “I established this fund so that my son would not be forgotten and to help students. What surprised me was how relieved I felt to know that this had been done. I have met the recipients of the fund, including Amanda Caldwell, and I am so happy to know that they have learned about my son and been able to benefit from this scholarship.”
