Recipient: Suong Nguyen

Suong Nguyen

“The Helen and Peter Skoufis Scholarship has given me the opportunity to concentrate on my education at UMaine without worrying about my financial situation. The scholarship has encouraged me to study hard and work towards my goal of becoming a nurse. I am very grateful for the generous gift provided by Helen and Peter Skoufis.”

Suong Nguyen is currently a fourth year student majoring in Nursing and minoring in Business Administration. She was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, but grew up in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School, in Bangor, Maine. Someday she would like to be a traveling nurse and care for patients in third-world countries.

The Helen M. and Peter J. Skoufis Scholarship was established in 1996 to benefit graduates of Bangor High School and John Bapst High School in Bangor, Maine. The late Peter Skoufis, a graduate of the Class of 1941, and his wife, Helen, established this fund to help young people obtain an education. Peter served his country in the Foreign Service throughout the world. After retiring in 1971 he began working for the United Nations as an assistant director of its food and agricultural organization in Rome. After being married to Helen for 55 years, he passed away in 2005.
