Recipient: Jessica Zwirn

Jessica Zwirn

“Thanks to the Nathan Levitan Scholarship and his family’s generosity, I have been able to focus my attention on obtaining my Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology. The Nathan Levitan Scholarship has financially supported me through much of my undergraduate degree and presently in my Master’s program as I pursue a degree in Speech Language Pathology. I will never forget the generosity of the Levitan family. I am very grateful that I have been given this amazing opportunity.”

Jessica Zwirn graduated from Noble High School in Berwick, Maine. She graduated from UMaine in May 2006 with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorder and a minor in Child Development. Jessica is currently attending her first year of graduate school at UMaine pursuing a career in Speech Language Pathology.

The Nathan Levitan Scholarship Fund was established in 1959 by Dr. Leon B. Levitan, Class of 1938, in memory of his father, Nathan Levitan. This fund is given to students who have demonstrated financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to students of Jewish extraction and/or students who are majoring in the field of social, theoretical, or historical economics.

This scholarship is a good example of the power of endowment. Established with a gift of $5,000, today, the fund has a principal of nearly $152,000; a fair market value of nearly $223,000 and has benefited countless students since its inception.
