The William F. and Mildred B. Schrumpf Scholarship

Recipient: Carmen Letour

Carmen Letour

The William F. and Mildred B. Schrumpf Scholarship truly eased my financial burden and aided in my being able to continue with my education. I am extremely grateful for being chosen for this scholarship and hope to express my gratitude by being a successful student.”

Carmen Detour is a non-traditional student. She completed her GED in Alabama around 1982. She was able to come to the University of Maine through the Onward Program, which is set up for non-traditional students, students with disabilities as well as first generation students. She is currently a junior in the Social Work program.

Carmen is a single mom and has raised four children. Her oldest recently graduated from the University of Maine. Her next in line is overseas doing missionary work and getting ready to go on to nursing school. Her youngest child is a senior in high school. Carmen says, “It has not been easy to make the choice of going back to school to improve my education and potential careers options, but I wanted to set an example for my children and show them I did not expect more from them than I did from myself.”

The William F. and Mildred B. Schrumpf Scholarship, named after William ’12 and Mildred “Brownie” ’25, is to be used for needy and deserving students attending the University of Maine whose character and promise make them worth of assistance in obtaining their education.
