Pamela J. Collins Nursing and Education Scholarship Established
The Pamela J. Collins Nursing and Education Scholarship Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2008 with bequests from the Pamela Jean Collins Living Trust and the Estate of Pamela Jean Collins, who passed away in 2008 after a fierce battle with cancer. Pam was an avid art collector. Although she perferred flea markets to galleries, she especially liked contemporary folk art and contemporary pieces with bold colors of mixed mediums. Her friends were divided into those who "loved" or "hated" her collection. In late 2005, Pam was diagnosed with cancer. Although given only six months to live, she refused to give up without a fight and began searching for treatment options around the world. This search led her to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. Her physician perscribed a newly formulated chemotherapy to which she responded remarkably well. In 2007, Pam moved her primary residence to Nashville to be near Vanderbilt-Ingram. She credits this treatment for extending her life for three additional years. Pam died March 28, 2008 at Alive Hospice in Nashville. The Pamela J. Collins Nursing and Education Scholarship Fund will be used to provide scholarship aid for deserving undergraduate students attending the University of Maine who are majoring in nursing or education; are in good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need.
