Passing the Torch
For the past few years, Russell "Russ" Bodwell '44 has employed students from SPIFFY (Student Portfolio Investment Fund of the University of Maine Foundation) to do internet research on stocks and read the financial news to him. Isaac Fernandez, a 2008 Business Administration graduate and former president of SPIFFY, has been working with Russ for the past two years. "My role consists of getting Russell information and then making sure that his decisioins get executed correctly. This can be a simple as opening a newspaper or going on a company's website. I also interpret financial statements and analysts reports. Russ takes the information I give him, combines it with his own research and experience, and then makes portfolio decisions," says Isaac. Isaac goes on to say, "Studying as a student at UMaine I have had three major sources of education. The professors at the university, SPIFFY, and Russ Bodwell."
