Reunion 2007 Snapshots
Reunion Weekend 2007 was most successful with over 600 alums returning to campus--a record number.
George Andrews '32, at the age of 97, was the oldest alumnus attending reunion weekend. He is shown with the Foundation's Planned Giving Officer Sarah McPartland-Good. In addition to the reunion weekend events, the University of Maine Alumni Association and the University of Maine Foundation celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the Buchanan Alumni House. A special program was held on the lawn of Buchanan Alumni House followed by a champagne reception in the McIntire Room of Buchanan Alumni House. Since its opening during Reunion Weekend 2002, the Buchanan Alumni House has been an exceptional resource for the University of Maine. Over 90,000 people have attended functions at Buchanan Alumni House. These figures do not include casual "drop in" visits, which number in the hundreds each year. In addition, the Buchanan Alumni House serves as the University's front door to potential students and their guests. In the past three years, over 15,000 students and guests have begun and ended campus tours at the Buchanan Alumni House. The 5th Anniversary celebration program was highlighted by the presentation of Rudy Vallee's saxaphone to the Alumni Association by his widow, Eleanor Vallee. Wes English '57 and his band provided musical entertainment prior to the program.
This year, the Distinguished Maine Professor award went to Dr. Ivan J. Fernandez'78G, '82 Ph.D., Professor of Plant Soil & Environmental Sciences. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in the University's tripartite mission of teaching, research, and public service. Accompanying the award is a $4,200 prize, distinctive blazer and a pewter medallion, all generously funded by the Class of 1942.
Senior Alumni Luncheon was inspired as always by student scholarship recipients. This year, recipients Jeremy Milton and Heather Shortt shared their experiences and expressed their gratitude to the Senior Alumni for their generous support. Senior Alumni Funds spin off about $40,000 each year for scholarship awards. However, for the past several years, the Senior Alumni have given out nearly $80,000 annually to fund scholarships thanks to the generosity of Senior Alumni. Below are snapshots of some of the luncheon attendees.
