Hosmer Engineering Design Center Students To Compete
Mechanical engineering students working in the Thomas P. Hosmer '58 Design Engineering Center are competing in the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition in which students must create an open wheel race car with a wheelbase of no less than 60 inches and a maximum engine displacement of 610cc. Engines must be fitted with a mandatory 20mm restrictor plate. Seniors are required to participate in the "hands-on" workshop as a culmination of engineering principles learned in the first three years of the curriculum. The Thomas P. Hosmer '58 Design Engineering Center not only focuses on designing and building projects, but also on testing, critiquing and comparing the results of the efforts with other students from the top engineering programs in North America.
The team will travel to Michigan in May of 2012 to compete against 119 other schools. Thomas Hosmer, who passed away May 11, 2011, worked as a consulting engineer for Arthur D. Little, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1965 to 2000, and as senior mechanical engineer for Nuvera Fuel Cells, Inc. in Cambridge, Masscchusetts until 2004. Hosmer's extensive work experience, combined with strong awareness of the needs of the fourth year mechanical engineering students at the University of Maine, led him to establish the Homer Design Center in the fall of 2004.
