Fourth Annual Paul Baldacci Golf Tourney Scores for Scholarship and UM Golf Team
The Fourth Annual Paul Baldacci Memorial Golf Classic was held on Tuesday, September 8th at Sable Oaks Golf Club in South Portland, Maine. Over 100 golfers participated in this annual charity event to benefit the Robert E. Baldacci, Sr. and Rosemary K. Baldacci Memorial Scholarship Fund and a new fund to establish a golf team at UMaine. The Tournament netted $18,058 thanks to the generosity of golfers who participated as well as a number of out right donations. This year, Athem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine was a Presenting Sponsor.
The Robert E. Baldacci, Sr. Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Maine Foundation in 1998. In 2002, with the death of his wife Rosemary, the fund was officially changed to Robert E. Baldacci, Sr. and Rosemary K. Baldacci Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund provides scholarship assistance to meritorious students enrolled at the University of Maine. In 2009, 4 students enrolled at the University, pursuing degrees in three different areas, received financial assistance from the scholarship.
This year, proceeds from the tournament also benefit a fund established to support efforts to bring golf back to UMaine. Comedian Bob Marley was Master of Ceremonies for the luncheon and auction that followed the event. Special guests included NBA Hall of Famer K.C. Jones and Red Sox legend Bob Stanley. In addition, recognition was given to the 1974 University of Maine Yankee Conference Champions who were represented by team members Maine golf great Mark Plummer, Peter Baldacci, Jim Karalekas, Chris Emmons, and their coach Skip Chappelle. Robert Baldacci III, tournament coordinator and nephew of Governor John Baldacci, said, "The University plays a key role in Maine's past, present and future. The successes of the young men and women that attend the University can only help to strengthen the state that we love so dearly. The opportunities the University has afforded my family for decades can never be forgotten. The lessons, skills and passions developed there are passed down to future generations hoping to make their own mark. We understand the gift and privilege all of us have been given in having such an institution imbedded into the foundation of our great state and we are driven to ensure its future vitality. " |
