Philip H. and Sylvia M. Emery Emergent Needs Fund Established

Philip and Sylvia Emery, both of whom are University of Maine graduates from the Class of 1957, have established a very special fund with the University of Maine Foundation. The Philip H. and Sylvia M. Emery Emergent Needs Fund will benefit activities, projects and/or programs on the University of Maine campus that confront unanticipated and emergent needs. It is not uncommon for campus projects or programs to face unanticipated needs. This fund will be there to help.

While Phil and Sylvia knew each other prior to entering the University of Maine, they started dating during their first four months on campus. As students, they were both quite involved in campus activities. Sylvia was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, All Maine Women, Phi Beta Kappa, Student Government, and Phi Kappa Phi. She majored in English. Phil was a letter winner in Track and Cross-Country. He was also a member of Phi Mu Delta, and he was a Sophomore Owl, in Student Government and played trombone in the Band, among other music groups on campus. He majored in Engineering Physics.

The Emerys have been very supportive of the University of Maine. Phil, having been a leader in the pulp and paper industry, has given significant time to the University of Maine Pulp & Paper Foundation, having served as a Director for 10 years and as its President and Chairman for a total of 4 years. Phil and Sylvia also established a scholarship with the University of Maine Pulp & Paper Foundation.

According to Phil and Sylvia, “We would not be where we are today without the University of Maine. We owe everything to the University of Maine.”

Requests for funds to help address emergent needs are regularly brought to the attention of the University of Maine. The Philip H. and Sylvia M. Emery Emergent Needs Fund will therefore be much appreciated by the entire campus.
