Marcia Smargon Kornetsky Sociology Prize Fund The Marcia Smargon Kornetsky Sociology Prize Fund was established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2008 with a gift from Conan Kornetsky, Ph.D., a member of the class of 1948 and their two children, David and Lisa, in loving memory of his wife of 58 years, Marcia Smargon Kornetsky. Mrs Kornetsky was also a member of the class of 1948, graduating from the University of Maine with a degree in Sociology. Mrs. Kornetsky subsequently was awarded a MSSW from the Boston University School of Social Work and enjoyed a rewarding career in social work with a special emphasis on children. She was a second generation student at the University of Maine. Her father, Isaac Smargonsky, was a 1919 graduate. Conan Kornetsky, in his eulogy, said, "In every case she made positive contributions to the lives of individuals. And not the least was that she managed work and the nurturing of two lovely children as well as three wonderful grandchildren." "I too am her legacy and as long as I live, much of what I do, much of what I say, much of what I believe, has been shaped by my 61 years with Marcia," Conan said. The income from the Marcia Smargon Kornetsky Sociology Prize will be used to recognize the outstanding graduating student majoring in sociology. It is intended that the prize will be awarded to the student with the highest overall grade point average with consideration given to the student's grade point average in sociology classes and contributions in class.
