Fund Raising and Development Confidentiality

Prospect and donor confidentiality is of utmost importance and must be maintained by the Foundation. When benefactors request anonymity, Foundation employees shall strive to maximize donor anonymity protection. However, names of donors and gift amounts shall be given through normal reporting channels to appropriate University officials on a need-to-know basis. If a donor expressly stated to a Foundation employee that absolute anonymity is essential regarding the donor’s estate, gift plan or gift amounts for the University, the employee is to abide by the donor’s wishes to the maximum extent possible and shall maintain files in a confidential manner marked “anonymous.”

Names of donors and information in donor files shall not be given out to the general public or news reporting services unless approved by the legal counsel of the Foundation with the consent of the donors and then only to the extent that the law provides.

Distribution of the names of scholarship recipients shall be the responsibility of the University of Maine. The Foundation recognizes the existence of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
